Have you ever felt like the only way to truly feel understood is to write?

 I most certainly have.

Writing reveals the things we didn’t know we needed to unleash. An outlet to ease every swirling thought in our mind. Allowing our words to flow easily. Giving a voice to the words that refuse to come out.

In this post I want to share how writing has aided me with healing. Guiding me to navigate my emotions and discover a way to understand myself. So, you too can see the power writing can create in your journey as well.

Writing has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s helped me process any- and every- emotion. Once a pencil was in my hand – or my fingers nestled onto a keyboard – I drifted away. I poured my thoughts into the safest escape I had.

Writing for me wasn’t just about placing words on the paper. It was the words coming straight from my heart.

I write to heal, I write because I am inspired, and I write when the words are just too unbearable to say aloud.

It was -and remains- everything to me as someone who was rather quiet and kept most thoughts to myself. It became my own world to getaway

It can be something as simple as a quick journal entry describing my day. A short poem or creating stories. I will even compose my own songs when I hear a certain melody – as the lyrics come to me in a sudden flow. It provides me with several versatile and simple ways to utilize my creative ideas into many forms.

Writing has given me a better way to organize my thoughts. Letting me see and process my unresolved feelings. While also helping me visualize my ideas more clearly.

Even as I share these words now it is incredible to see how you can even connect to others who may feel similar to you. Furthermore, those who are moved by your composed stories and words.

I can’t recall the many books -fiction or nonfiction, stories, or poems- that I’ve read that have altered me in some way.

That’s what I love about writing. The impact it can bring. The fact that your words do matter.

It’s always been a way for me to free the thoughts that roam my mind. To know someone could possibly find solace in my own words. It is an unimaginable feeling to know any of you would identify, relate, or choose to take the time to read my work. It’s almost better than a face-to-face conversation.

Something about writing is so vulnerable. Maybe since that’s how most of us are when we choose to jot down our words – exposed. There is no thinking before you speak. There is no time to think. It is just the truest form of writing coming as authentically as it found you.

The growth I found within continuous writing is very evident. I’ve compared my past pages to my current. Although my past drafts still make me smile. I can see the improvement in my current work. It’s been a phenomenal way to see the changes I’ve made within myself – as I’ve learned, healed, and grown. To see the differences in how I articulate and how I convey. The way my words have become more free – confident.

If writing isn’t something you’ve done -or that you’re familiar with- I want to encourage anyone. Pick up a pencil or begin typing on that keyboard. Find your voice, phrase your emotions, in a way that is intimate to yourself. You might even find a new creative outlet for your ideas.

In every moment – writing will always be there, waiting for us to return.

We write the words to our own stories – we are our own authors – who can tell a story of you better than you?

Writing questions, you may have and their answers:

Here’s some #tips and answers on how to start your own writing journey.

Let’s help you get out of your head!

What should I write about?

Absolutely anything! Start with a simple draft of how your day went. Discuss the happy moments and even the instances that may have been negative.

Here’s some journal prompts:

Today here’s something I learned new-

My favorite movie and why-

How am I feeling today?

Ways I can feel I’m changing-

What’s the point of writing?

To give a safe haven to the thoughts that never get a chance to be heard. It allows you to vent out your emotions instead of bottling them up. To see and reread those feelings may even give you a sense of validation. Knowing you created an open space, let it out, and gave your words meaning. It will feel like a big exhale- a release

What’s the best time to write and where?

Anytime, anywhere. Writing is even more lovely because that’s just the thing. You can take it anywhere with you. At home, at school, or at work. You write when the urge comes. When the thoughts won’t stop till it’s on paper. It can be the first thing you do in the morning, or the last thing you do at night. Try to navigate which way works best for you!

Do you have to write with just pencil and paper?

You sure don’t. There are so many tools to access writing – your phone, computer, iPad, or a journal. Any of those can help when you’re out and about. As simple as pulling up your notes app or a doc form. Sometimes writing with pencil and paper tends to make it feel more real – although optional. There’s nothing like the scratched mistakes, the scribbled words, and the eraser marks. Choose the way that perfectly represents and is easiest for you!

How do I stay consistent?

Trust me, writer’s block is something serious. Everyday doesn’t need to be a paragraph or summary. If you don’t have much to say, keep it short and simple. Make a routine. Try 1-2 days starting off and then aim for 3-4 once you feel more comfortable.

How do I know if I’m doing it right?

There is no right way. Your journals and writings are YOU! They are your deepest thoughts or happiest moments you’ve documented. There is no pressure whatsoever, just the simple act of letting go. Think of it as your diary – personal, full of secrets, & another version of you.

Don’t think too deeply, leave that for your writing 😊

Will this help me?

I can’t guarantee it will, but I believe it is better to try than not at all. Test out different variations and see which style of writing may fit you best. If writing may not do the trick, perhaps record yourself. Our voices can create the writing as well – stories, reflections, conversations.

I hope you embark on your own writing journey! Even if you want to start small our mailbox is always an open safe place – only one click away. Where your words will be received with the care they deserve!

Words carry a power that transcends and when you give them the space they need-

They are infinite.

‘Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.’ (William Wordsworth)
